New Mexico’s wine story began in 1629, when Spanish monks planted the first grape vines along the Rio Grande. Today, the state’s wine industry produces over one million cases annually, blending Old World traditions with New World innovation to create a unique expression of place and character.
Planting a vineyard in New Mexico is a bold pursuit embraced by those who understand the land’s unique challenges and rewards. Growers have balanced climate, soil, and terrain for nearly four centuries to cultivate diverse grape varieties. Our high-desert vineyards, elevated between 3,800 and 6,000 feet, benefit from intense sunlight, allowing the grapes to mature and express their true character fully.
Family-owned wineries are the heart of New Mexico’s wine industry, passing down traditions through generations and embodying the spirit of the land. A new wave of winemakers is blending centuries-old techniques with modern innovations to create award-winning wines, from bold reds to refreshing whites. We invite you to uncork, savor, and discover New Mexico Wine.
